Ex-Oklahoma State assistant Glenn Spencer named Charlotte 49ers' defensive coordinator

The Charlotte Observer — David Scott The Charlotte Observer

Feb. 14--Former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer has been hired for the same position by the Charlotte 49ers.

Spencer, who was fired by the Cowboys in January, will replace Matt Wallerstedt, who was let go by 49ers coach Brad Lambert after Charlotte finished near or at the bottom of several Conference USA defensive categories last season.

Under Spencer, the Cowboys were fifth in the Big 12 in total defense last season (409.3 yards per game) and sixth in scoring defense (29.4 points per game). Oklahoma State's defense struggled at times, however, especially during a four-game stretch in which the Cowboys allowed an average of 47.0 points per game, including a 62-52 loss against rival Oklahoma and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield.

"Fundamentally we want to be sound: leveraging the football, getting off blocks and tackling and creating turnovers which was one thing we were known for out there," Spencer said in a statement. "What can we do on our side of the ball to win games? We want to dictate tempo and keep them off balance with pressure and maximize the talent that we have returning. What I enjoy about this game transcends more than tackling and getting off blocks. I enjoy being able to impact lives, to lead a room and lead a unit with the ultimate goal to win championships."

Spencer, a native of Douglasville, Ga., played at Georgia Tech. He started his coaching career at West Georgia, where he was head coach from 1998-2000. He's also been at Georgia Tech, Duke and spent 10 seasons at Oklahoma State, as defensive line coach, linebackers coach and defensive coordinator from 2013-17.

Charlotte offensive line coach Greg Adkins also coached at Oklahoma State in 2015 and '16.

Lambert also named special teams coordinator Charlie Skalaski as receivers coach. Skalaski coached receivers previously at Liberty and Eastern Kentucky, where he was associate head coach in 2015.
