Placer County officials said Sunday morning they fully support the decision of IRONMAN officials to cancel today's triathlon because of air quality concerns created by the King Fire in Placer and El Dorado counties. "This morning officials from IRONMAN, with tremendous data support from the Placer County Air Pollution Control District, made the decision to cancel the race," said Dr. Robert Oldham, Placer County's Public Health Officer.

As the massive King Fire consumed nearly 130 square miles of Sierra terrain, smoke forced the cancellation of a popular Lake Tahoe sporting event and worsened air quality over a large swath of foothills. Early Sunday morning, Ironman Lake Tahoe officials announced the cancellation of the grueling event, disappointing the 3,000 athletes assembled to compete.

13 near the small community of Pollock Pines , east of Placerville and north of Highway 50. It advanced north through sparsely populated Eldorado National Forest. As of Sunday morning, the fire had burned 82,000 acres in El Dorado and Placer counties.

Placer County issued a poor air quality advisory Saturday, because of smoke coming in from the King Fire. The county urged people to avoid being outdoors for long periods of time until the air quality improves.

As the King Fire spreads from El Dorado County to Placer County, the number of firefighters on scene continues to rise as well. According to CAL FIRE, The fire has burned 126 square miles of land, and firefighters are trying to assess how many homes have actually been damaged or destroyed by the fire.

The King Fire burning through the Sierra Nevada has cut off electricity supplied by a number of hydroelectric reservoirs and likely also damaged a number of treasured recreation areas in the region. Officials remain in the dark about much of the damage, as the fire continues to rage and access to many areas is simply not available.
