According to the Placer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, six more people reported being solicited in the "jury duty" scam. Placer County Sheriff's detectives say they have been working to locate the perpertators, who are believed to be operating from out-of-state.

Placer County officials have backed away from a land-use battle with the city of South Lake Tahoe. But they're moving ahead with the larger effort aimed at allowing development of a hotel on the north side of the lake for the first time since 1959.

A proposal that included building residential homes within the Lake Tahoe Basin has been withdrawn so a revised plan without basin development can be submitted, according to Placer County. The Martis Valley West Parcel Project, which aims to shift a development designation from a parcel located east of Highway 267 to the west, will instead cluster all development in Martis Valley, the county announced Tuesday afternoon.

The California Employment Development Department reported that Placer County had 9,400 unemployed workers out of a total civilian workforce of 178,700 people last month. Its seasonally unadjusted 5.2 percent jobless rate was down from the 5.9 percent posted for November and from the 6.5 percent recorded for December a year earlier.

Former Placer County Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Skogen was recently sentenced by Placer County Superior Court by the Honorable Judge Jeff Penney. Pursuant to a plea agreement reached with the District Attorney's office, the defendant was sentenced to three years formal probation and must serve 150 days in jail and attend counseling.
